In some of the larger gogo bars, the rates are set by management to give all girls a fair chance at the income. Also to keep the "Value" of the bar up - "Our girls are expensive as we only have perfect girls" type of thing. Also, there was a time when the mamasan took a cut of the girls fees, but although this is said to have finished, I suspect not so.
Mamasans have more control over the girls than the bar owner. A while ago, one gogo bar lost 15 girls overnight when the mamasan left and moved to another bar unannounced.
If the fees are left to negotiation, your manner, dress and treatment of the girls can greatly help in the matter of fee negotiation. Cussing and swearing, an unshaven face and dirty clothes will put up her fees or even get a refusal, whereas if she fancies you, it may well drop. But money also counts. Some girls go out with the high payers as they have their own financial targets to meet, gold to buy and family back home to support. Time of day, or night also counts. When the bar closes, she has little chance of a bar fine and the Discos are still closing earlier than in the "Good Old Days".
Basically, the top drawer bars will be asking 1,500 to 2,000 Baht for short time entertainment. 2,000 to 3,500 will be asked for all night fun. In the run of the mill Gogos, you may well get a girl for 1,000 - 1,500 all night.
Most bars, but not all, operated an "Up to the girl" barfine system. If she does not fancy you, she can refuse. In Body Massage places and some Gogos, the girl cannot turn you down.
One Gogo bar has a sign on the counter which says "Prostitution in Thailand is illegal. Payment of a bar fine is not an invitation to sex". Check that what you expect is what you are going to get. Ask the questions about what you want from the time with her.
Most ST bars will ask a lot more than they expect, but most settle for 500 Baht for an hours horizontal dancing. In the same bar you may find a girl who thinks she is above all that and will ask 3,000 Baht. But there is always a sucker out there and converting it back to what he pays back home. But we are not back at home, we are in Thailand.
The Beer bars are the cheaper area for girls, but surprisingly, Beer Bars in the Walking Street (and Soi 1, 2 & 3 area) can be more expensive than even some Agogo bars within sight of their beer bar. The best value is in the Soi Diana Inn beer bars and the "Made in Thailand" market area beer bars. While it is hard to find the old 500 Baht LT, you can still get a 800-1,000 Baht girl to keep you happy. But again, watch out for the Money Dreamers.
The "I've just finished work" girls and "freelancers" can be seen wandering up Walking street from 1:00am in droves. There is so much competition to get a punter, so remember that it is then a Buyers Market. If you do not like their quote, just wait where you stand and wait for the next one to approach you! (Beware that many of the loitering girls in WS are really Katoeys)
Note: If you pick up a Gogo girl in the after hours disco, and you have NOT been in her bar, she will not have the BF stopped from her salary. If you have been in her bar, it will be stopped if management find out.
Finally, there are the Beach girls (AKA Coconut Bar), which the City Fathers are trying to drive out from the Beach Promenade area. One of my friends swears by them [that means he thinks they are the best value] and gets a girl from 200 ST to 500 Baht LT, whereas I have another friend who lives here walks up and offers them 3,000 Baht for a ST. Both get as much fun. One girl I know got a Canadian on his first night in town, who paid her 3,500 Baht for the night. That paid her months rent, which was also 3,500 Baht for the room. The next punter paid the more sensible price and was greeted with as much passion.
The only downside to Beach girls is that not all have health checks, may not have an ID card to check where they are from and a very small amount thieve while you sleep. Just keep your wallet and Passport in the hotel safe and keep just enough cash on yourself to pay her in the morning. Maybe even lock your mobile and camera in your suitcase before going to sleep.
Body Massages: These are usually a package price deal, so whatever you get up to in the foam bath is included in the price. Try a Thai Sandwich - 2 girls in the bath in the same time massaging you from both sides (one on top and one below) at the same time.
WARNING: There have been a few cases, first in many months, where unknown girls have drugged their punter, who has woken up with a bad head and no money or mobile. In DEC 2005 there was a report on TV that 3 Indian men had taken 3 girls back to their room which they rented for a night. When they did not check out at noon, the hotel checked the room. All three were unconscious and their possessions were missing. The TV said that all were taken to hospital and 2 were unlikely to recover.
PLEASE NOTE that unlike the Philippines, where the Bar fine includes the ladies time, in Thailand, you have to negotiate a rate for the ladies' time on top of the bar fine.
