This section is to tell you about the varying occupations of girls you will be looking for and meeting.
In most Agogo bars, there are 4 main types of girls you will meet in the bars. See also, the section on Bar Fines
Dancers: These are the girls dancing on the poles, some more energetic than others. Usually they wear bikinis, but some bars use "Hot Pants and Crop" tops, while some favour the lace wrap round skirt. They are the standard "available" staff in all gogos.
Showgirls: Some bars have "showgirls", the bar fine for which is higher, as the management want the girls around to do the shows. They do more extravagant dances and interesting costumes, such as the currently popular "sadist show", where there is a lot of slapping with soft rubber hoses that make noise but no pain. One show I never understand is the Hot Wax show, where a girl drips hot candle wax on her body.
Hostesses: This is a new phenomenon, where girls in street clothes hit on you for drinks and bar fines. First started by Polo, the migrated to Peppermint group (Peppermint, Happy, Beach Club) and now spread round most gogos. Basically, it is more "Stock on the hoof" for the bar to rent out. I cannot see the reason to pay Gogo Bar bar fine prices on what are in effect are Beer Bar girls, which you can get for 200-300 Baht BF outside and lower "Home entertainment" fees!
Waitresses: Now most bars allow the waitresses to be bar fines. Again, these girls command a higher bar fine, as with no waitresses, there are no drinks sold.
Support staff include the Mamasan, who will negotiate between you and the girl of your choice if her English is non-existent, the cashiers and the cleaner, who is called a "Mere Bahn".
Coyote Bars are a growing trend, based on dance style of the film "Coyote Ugly". In Soi LK Metro, there are 3 Coyote bars, of which Club Blu is the best and most popular. There are normally two types of girls, plus waitresses.
Coyote Dancers: The girls dance in "Sexy Clothes" like micro shorts and crop tops. Usually they are more energetic dancers than Agogo dancers and with no pole, have to support themselves <grin>. Being the "Super Dancers", they also expect more more for outside entertainmant.
Hostesses:Non dancer staff who do not serve drinks.
These are the original girls that built up Pattaya's reputation. There are many thousand out there. The Bar Fines are less, usually 200-300 Baht, and so are the "Home entertainment" fees. For the small bar fine fee, you get the safety that you you have the bar owner to discuss any problems with. Also, there is great fun feeling in most beer bars. One downside is you cannot check for stretch marks, like you can with a gogo dancer in her bikini. The downside is the conflicting load music from the adjacent bars.
They are people who do not work for a bar or other business, who approach you in Discos and on the street. Be very careful, as if things go wrong, you cannot trace them or have a mamasan to resolve the problem. In effect, Bars give you security. Always ask for an ID card. But you can get some great deals, as they are more cash hungry.
Pattaya is full of ordinary people, living ordinary lives. Most Thais are a reserved and modest people. Assuming that they work in the bar industry can be offensive to many of them. Yes, they are here to live off the tourist dollar / Pound / Euro, but who can blame them trying to better their life-style than cutting rice or carving teak.
A friend once said: "The people you are looking for, are the people who are looking at you".
Having said all this, one cannot deny that some people have some envy of the money made by successful Gogo girls and shown by the gold they wear. Sometimes they also want to get a "Slice of the action" to pay some bills or just enjoy the good life. While it is hard to identify them in their day-to-day life, they too may go the the discos around town on the prowl.
