Thai jails are notoriously severe and known locally as the Monkey House, mainly because of the large communal cells, with up to 150 people to a cell. Sanitation is very basic - sometimes only an open squat loo. Food is meagre, but your friends can bring you food. Most people have heard of the "Bangkok Hilton", which is the nickname of Thailand toughest jail. Life here can really means life.
There is a "Prisoner Exchange System" in place with countries like England. After a percentage of the sentence is served, maybe you can get back to be near your family so they can visit you in jail. BUT... the sentence remains the same as in Thailand, so while you new jail friends are released, you still serve your Thai sentence. Any reduction has to be granted through the Thai courts.
Remember, the best way to stay out of jail is not to be stupid and do something that will put you there in the first place. This is NOT the soft west, where you get TV rooms and Gyms. Just keep your nose clean and enjoy your holiday. There is plenty to do anyway.
DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH DRUGS. Like many Asian counties, the penalty can be DEATH
STAND UP AN BE SHAMED: If you get arrested for anything, there are always several TV camera crews waiting at the Police Station or listening to the police radio and come to the scene of the offence, so expect a camera in your face. Your accuser will stand beside you and point at you. "He did it!" You will appear that night on Pattaya One News TV and Pattaya People News TV. Maybe even Pattaya Mail on TV, but they try to show the better (Tourist) side of Pattaya. There will also be the local cable TV news reporters and the national.
TV crews also cover the accidents and show the bodies laying in the wreckage. A murderer will be made re-enact his crime for the police and the TV crews will film it for the days news. Thai TV is real and raw, not sanitized like in the UK or US.
