The law states that you must carry an ID card or passport at all times. There is a 500 Baht fine for not doing so. If you are worried about losing your passport, it used to be acceptable to carry a photocopy of your passport "Photo" page and the Visa stamp page and TM card.
Usually a driving licence with photo like now issued in the UK will be acceptable, or your countries ID card, as it also shows your photo and personal details, will do. For certainty, check with the Tourist Police or Immigration Police.
The minimum age to enter an "Entertainment" venue (Karaoke, Agogo, Bar) (and even Cybercafe! Due to on-line games) is 20, the Police will be asking to see ID when they do spot checks on customers. There is now a law (2009) that Internet cafes are to record your ID or Passport number when you use the internet.
Some Agogo / Disco security staff also ask to see the ID of any girl with you, as the fine is 20,000 to the bar owner for having under-age customers, both Tourist and Thais.
